It is not easy to be a good teacher as teaching is not an easy job. A good teacher must know how to have good relations with his/her students. Yet, at the same time, a good teacher must teach his/her students how to respect him/her. He/she must set clear limits for the students to respect. In other words, students must know when their teacher needs hard work on thier part and when the time is for having a little fun in class. A good teacher must also do his/her best to draw all of his/her students' attention. He/she must be original, creative, understanding, ... . All of this will install a good learning atmosphere where both the students and the teacher will feel at ease. Sometimes a teacher has to play the role of social adviser. Indeed, when we deal with human beings, we cannot help but deal with their problems as well. And I think this is a large part of the teacher's job. The students should be able to trust their teacher who will in turn advise them on any of their problems. Put together, a teacher must of course have a good educational level. But, what makes a good teacher is his/her humane side. This is what makes a difference because getting the required intellectual level is at reach (it is something we can learn as students, trainees, and teachers eventually), whereas being a good person, and therefore a good teacher, is much more difficult to reach. 5  out of 5 found this valuable. I think that delimiting the characteristics of a good teacher is by no means an easy task. Yet, there should be some criteria that the teacher should have in order to be called "a good teacher". Teaching, as claimed by many scholars is an art. The teacher has to be skilled. Yet, s/he must improve and promote this skill by hard work. The teacher must keep himself updated. First, s/he must have a good methdodological training, try to bring authentic material and to captivate his students' attention and enhance their motivation. Moreover, s/he must be flexible enough at the human level to allow all kinds of interactional activities, of course in the limits of good conduct within the boundaries of the classroom. All the teacher' s practicies have to be oriented towards the goals and objectives previously defined. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

i think a good English teacher should have at least four main features: he should be active, friendly, funny, and competent. First of all, he should be active because if the teacher is active learners will feel systemtically active, and hence motivated. Secondly, it is better to be a friend more than a teacher in today's classerooms because students nowadays do not accept those teachers who want th show that they are the masters with all the authority of the world in hands. But, of course, teachers should not be so lenient otherwise things fall apart. Thirdly, funny teachers are always the best in the eyes of learners, and if your learners like you as a teacher, they would probably like the subject. In the Tunisian context, it is well known that there is a negative attitudes among students toward learning languages, and if you manage as an English teacher to make your learners like the subject, your have certainly done a great deal. It should be noted, however, that as a teacher you should always have the ability to manage your classrom: being funny when you can be and being serious when you need to. Last but not least, a good teacher should be competent enough first to handle his course effectively, and second to gain respect as a teacher. Actually, students hate incompetent teachers, and they even try to make fun of them. If a teacher loses his image as a competent teacher he would achieve a little as far as learners' learning process is concerned.

4. good teachers are often the key to a student s success

To my mind, there is a set of characteristics that a good teacher should have. Firstly, a good teacher should have a good mastery of the classroom so as t.o achieve mutual respect between the teacher and the students can be mutually exchanged. Secondly, class management is as equally important as mastery of English as a subject taught. Inspite of the existence of such constraints, a good teacher can manage to overcome them thanks to his experience, competence, and good management.
More basically, the teacher ought to adopt authentic teaching techniques, methods that would facilitate the task for the student ;leading to a better understanding of the point in focus. Such techniques cannot be successful unless appropriate materials are selected, in order to be compatible with the nature of the lesson.
The mission of the teacher is a bit difficult when taking into account the heterogeneity of the classroom. As a matter of fact, the students are never alike in any classroom, they have different levels, social and economic backgrounds, which have implications on their motivation, interestedness in the subject, and their feelings as being effective members in the classroom.
It is important to point that there are some factors which may cause some hindrances in the process of learning. Among these factors we find :lazy and naughty students, and slow learners who show a little motivation on their side.

A good English teacher must do his or her best to make the leaning operation prove as much succsseful as possible. And most importantly he or she should care for the learners' needs.Besides,a good English teacher should be well informed about the various learning strategies. In addition to this, she or he must be selective in choosing activities and tasks. He is expected to guide his learners rather than spoonfeed their minds by which seems futile for them.
it worth pointing out that an enjoyable atmosphere which is void of stresss will extremely improve the learning process.Least but not last,a good English teacher should test what he taught to get feedback .

As far as I m concerned, a good English teacher is primarily the one who is able to help his students achieve good academic results as well as learning efficiency.
In order to achieve that, many charecteristics are needed.
Indeed, a good teacher should be able to master his class and be wise when dealing with students' behavioural problems. Besides, he should know how to motivate his students and make them interested in the lesson through the good and adequate choice of teaching material. Another feature of a successful teacher is to show himself really competent by being serious and by well-preparing his lessons before coming into his class.
Furthermore, being cooperative with other teachers is another feature that is worth taking into consideration.
At the human level, a good teacher should be friendly, helpful and comprehensive.

A good teacher is someone who will always be remembered when not around. It is not WHAT he has to teach that entitles him to such a lofty status, for that could be done by any other teacher and yet they might not qualify as good teachers. It is rather HOW he teaches what he has to teach. A teacher who cares and shares whatever he wields will always be remembered. A teacher who is there for ME inside and outside the classroom is a good one. A teacher who makes learning a JOY not a tedious TASK is a good one. A teacher who creates an oasis within a chaotic world is a good one. A teacher with whom I feel safe and secure is a good teacher. A teacher who is patient when I cannot get it, repeat with a smile, not a frown is a good teacher. A teacher who looks cheerful in sad times, warm in cold seasons and inspiring in an insipid world is a good one. A teacher who wields the power of the word, not the might of the stick is a good teacher. A teacher who forgives, practices what he preaches is a good teacher. Hey! is there such a creature around us? Definitely yes, but OFTEN they go unsung.

A good English teacher in Tunisia should be characterised by a number of important features.First of all, an English teacher who is judged to be good must provide a relaxing atmosphere for his or her students so that the flow of learning could run spontaneously and at ease.Secondly,in order for teaching to be adequate and effective, the teacher must fulfill multiple roles at the same time:she/he is the counsellor, the advisor, the helper, the adviser and most importantly the facilitator of the process of learning. In fact, a good teacher should be able to perform and to adjust their role for the common benefit of students.Third, establishing a good relationship full of respect and understanding is needed to motivate learners especially beginners and to encourage them to like and appreciate the teaching material. In addition, a good teacher is the one who is able to vary their methods and techniques of teaching according to the specifities of the classroom level, learners' needs and curriculum.By doing this, the teacher creates an enjoyable environment for learners because they will not feel bored when exposed to the same "style" of teaching. Finally, a good teacher must know in advance that students do not have the same profile and traits of character; accordingly, they will not behave in the same way.As a matter of fact the teacher should know how to respond with each student to promote discipline and order. To conclude, all the above mentiond features,I think, must be available for a good teacher. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Pete Corder said: "efficient language learning must work with rather than against natural processes, facilitate and expedite rather than impede learning."
Knowing well all about a language does not necessarily mean being a good language teacher. certain qualifications are required to make any teacher be ready to be good teacher
1/ ACADEMIC COMPETENCE
a) A good mastery of the English language (spoken and written)
Any project of a good teacher sets basic academic requirements at the level of competence which is a prior step towards real teaching performance. The present language teacher has certainly acquired all the basic linguistic data about that language, namey the phonology, the morphology and the syntax. Theoretically any person having such qualifications should be apt enough to teach that language; yet it²s not enough.
B/ pedagigical skills
c)

* A good teacher should be sociable, indoubted with the sense of integration, comprehensive, and helpful. As Tunisian learners, we need a teacher who is highly comprehensible in what concerns tunisian learner behaviours to encourage us to learn English.
* A good English teacher should make a compromise between what s/he had learnt about teaching methodology and what his or her students really need to secure a good learning process. English teacher have to rely on new and creative tasks and applications in order to attract the attention of the learners and boost them to follow the courses with high level of motivation.
* What an English teacher should not do is being so nervous freightening the students with his or her bad mood because this can affect the teacher-learner relationship. The teacher should not burden the students with a lot of exercises which may have bad repercacions on their motivation for learning a foreign language or even on their behaviour.
* Personally, I was subject to bad behaviour of a secondary teacher who insalted me for not doing my homework correctly.

Generally speaking, the English teacher,in Tunisia, is first judged on the basis of his fluency and his approximation of the American or British accent. As far as I'm concerned,I do give credit to every teacher who achieves a native like pronunciation because this boosts his authenticity and self-confidence in the classroom,However I think that a good english teacher should have a certain degree of linguistic competence ,I mean his mastery of the grammar of the target language, for the sake of accuracy at the level of the spoken and written word.I believe as well in the democratic and flexible teacher who motivates his students to engage in the classroom discussions by creating an intimate atmosphere, by the way this strategy helps a lot to develop the communicatve sills of the students. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. A good teacher has to create motivating activities so as his/her students will be involved in discussions. A good teacher is someone who is able to let his/her students be able to come to terms with the objective of the lesson and to allow them to raise questions and to have the ability to clarify things for them since a teacher is actually a facilitator. A good teacher needs to know the updates and changes his/her teaching strategies in order to encourage the learnrs to learn. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?
